May Skaley
Teaches piano and French horn
May recently completed a collection of two compositions: “Through the Forest” and “Running through Fields.” She wrote the compositions right after she played the game “Break of the Wild” for far too long. She collaborated with other musicians and the results are wonderful! Taking music lessons involves much more than learning to read sheet music, understanding finger placement, and refining your appreciation for sound. Music lessons provide invaluable skills that can help a student’s personal, social, and academic development. A student of music can foster and develop an appreciation for being creative, confident, and persistent in their efforts to improve upon a new ambition.
Music lessons provide a platform for children, teens, and adults to set goals and watch them unfurl in front of their eyes. The skills learned in a music lesson or during a recital are applicable outside of the realm of just music. For example, if a student takes voice lessons, they’re working to improve their tone of voice; this will, in turn, make them more confident and direct speakers in the classroom or at work. Music schools are positive and uplifting environments for students that nurture personal development. A young guitar student who sits in a mentoring session for 30 minutes will not only progress in her musical abilities, but she will also develop other essential skills, such as her attention span and practice habits. Music lessons teach students the value of completing a task once it is started. The process of following through on an entire process is a valuable skill that helps shape a student into a successful and motivated person later in life.

What instrument(s) do you teach? I teach piano, harp and voice.
How long have you been teaching? I have been teaching for 7 years, 4 with Key Mobile Music.
How many students do you teach? The number of students I teach is like a small classroom. This fall I am teaching 21 students between Key Mobile Music and my own private lessons.
What do you like most about teaching? My favourite thing about teaching is exploring music together with students and talking about our day and interests while we play.
How old were you when you started music lessons? I started piano lessons when I was eight and harp lessons came later when I started high school.
What was studying music like when you were learning to play your instrument(s)? I had music teachers that were very kind and encouraging. They really knew their instruments and shared a lot of advice with me about stage fright, skill exercises and sharing the music I loved to play in performances.
What is your favourite kind of music? I like a lot of types of music genres, especially if it tells a story and has lots of rhythm.
What are your latest music projects? In September I played harp with the Kaleido Family Arts Festival. It is a festival I do each year and I love how it ties music with art and the community. This year I played inside the Nina Haggerty art gallery and outside through the Front Porch series. Harp sounds beautiful outside if it is not too cold.
Do you have interests outside of music? My interests outside of music are to make big sculptures out of heavy materials and show them around the world. I am an artist so I like to use my hands to make new things. I also love to read books about other worlds and going camping.
What tip would you give to our students for learning an instrument? When learning an instrument, you want to always check in with your body to see if you’re relaxed. Music is just like a sport, if your muscles are too tense it can be harder to play the way you like.
Is there anything else that you would like to add? I am excited for another year with Key Mobile Music and to see the students flourish in their music playing.
Thank you, Alicia!
