Name: Aleah
Teacher: Michelle
Instrument: Piano
Years taking lessons: Seven
What do you love most about music lessons?
I love learning new songs and challenging myself with new songs.
Is there anything challenging about your music lessons? The challenges would be learning new notes and chords but there wouldn’t be anything I would change about my music lessons.
What’s the coolest thing you’ve learned in your lessons recently? I’ve learned to play some of my favourite songs by my favourite artists.
What songs/pieces are you working on right now? I am working on “Ready for it?” and “We are Never Ever Getting Back Together” by Taylor Swift.
What are you most excited about working on next?
Brand new songs and hopefully improving and getting better at piano.
Tell us about any pets that you have. I have a black cat named Cinder.
Please tell us anything else you’d like us to know about you!
I like playing the piano a lot and I hope to do it a lot longer. I also like to travel and I’m excited to go to Disneyland later this year.
Thank you, Aleah!
Siaw Kin Lee
What instrument do you teach? The piano.
How long have you been teaching? Just over 30 years.
How many students do you teach?
I am teaching nearly 50 students this semester.
What do you like most about teaching?
This is such a huge question! I enjoy many aspects of teaching, but I truly appreciate the little moments where their eyes light up when they figure out a technique or understand the theory behind the practical. It is very rewarding.
How old were you when you started music lessons?
I was 11 when I first played the piano. I studied violin as a required second instrument in college. Later on, I also learned erhu (Chinese violin), Gu Zheng (Chinese zither) and Gu Qin (another Chinese zither).
What was studying music like when you were learning to play your instrument(s)?
Practicing is a solo activity, which can be lonely sometimes, but it trains musicians to focus and quiet the mind. In some ways, it is like working on a puzzle or getting know to a new ‘friend’ when you learn a new piece. Of course, when I was younger practicing was ‘doing homework’… later I also came to enjoy the learning process.
Tell us about your latest music project.
My new piano solo piece (Title) 32 miniature for solo piano: A set of three will be premiered on Friday 14 June 2024 by Canadian pianist Roger Admiral (who teaches at the University of Alberta), during the Now Hear This festival, hosted by NME (New Music Edmonton).
What tip would you give to our students for learning an instrument?
Practice makes better! Keep going even on the days when you don’t feel like putting in the work.
What is your favourite kind of music?
Music that speaks to me. However, I think I am still more classical music oriented (I grew up playing mostly classical music and quite heavily classical trained in my early years of music institute education).
What are your interests outside music?
Chinese Martial Arts, Ballet, swimming and reading books.
Is there anything else that you would like to add?
A tip for those who wish to embark on their musical journey: Many want to learn to play an instrument just for fun. But remember that hard work is also necessary before you get to the fun part.
Thank you, Siaw Kin!

Teacher Hannah
Hannah has been lovely. She listens to what type of music Alex is interested in and is very flexible with her schedule. Alex has taken lessons from other teachers but has never wanted to practice as much as he currently does!
Teacher Karla
Karla is fabulous! Huxley just loves how kind, patient, and fun she is. Karla takes the time to sit and listen to what Huxley has to say which makes him feel heard and important. Huxley loves doing the theory work in his book with Karla. He isn’t super keen to practice at home but can’t wait to go on Wednesdays to Karla’s for piano! We are so glad we have found such a wonderful teacher! Also, Karla has been kind enough to allow our 6-year-old daughter to stay and watch Huxley do his piano lessons and now Hadleigh would like to do piano lessons next year! We have had a great experience! Thank you! from Avalon
Teacher Kennis
Very patient and kind. The kids love her. from Julie

Siaw Kin is an excellent teacher, Reyn has blossomed under her instruction. She is talented and able to explain concepts to Reyn and has really fostered a love for piano in her.
